Halloween Overnight

A Report from a Parent

Upon arrival, the scouts began exploring.  They headed straight to the small creek that was down the hill behind the cemetery.  It was all wooded and loaded with beautiful fall colors and smells.  After about a half and hour, without being told to do so, the boys began to come back up and started to clean up the area.  They began raking, blowing leaves, picking up sticks, and moving logs.  The older scouts were directing the younger scouts, they were working together; they shared their ideas, and it all worked.  The leaders started on their own projects of trimming trees, cutting up logs, and clearing tombstones.

After the work was done, the pizzas were ordered and it was time to set up camp.  Tables were set up, the tv entertainment area was set up, and a fire was built.  The leaders worked on First Class requirements with the newer scouts.

After the pizzas were delivered (thanks, Mrs. Flenner!), the boys filled their empty bellies and ate the snacks that they all brought to share.  After their hunger was satisfied, they settled into their sleeping bags to prepare for watching movies all night long.  Dave and Steve made sure the fire stayed hot, and everyone was happy.

I was very impressed in seeing how the boys just jumped in to do what had to be done without being told.  The older scouts were giving directions to the younger scouts, or they just worked together and got things done.  It  was great to see first hand what scouting is all about.  As a parent, I can not thank the leaders enough for the time and effort they put in to teach our boys the values of scouting.  I see first hand how it is shaping our boys into become fine young, productive men.  It would not be possible without the dedication of the leaders and parents who help out.

Troop Trivia Explained

Let's try something new and fun.  Each week, there will be a new trivia question relating to scouting or our troop website.  All you have to do is visit our troop website, find the trivia question that has been posted and figure out the answer to it.  When you think you know, you will have to e-mail me the answer.  Each scout who e-mails me with the correct anwer will receive a prize* at the next meeting.  To keep things interesting, once in a while there will be a question that will have a bigger prize attached to it, for ex. being exempt from KP at the next camp out.  There's a catch to the bigger prize though.  You must be the FIRST one to respond to the question**.  So be sure to check your Troop's website often - you never know when the big prize trivia question will come.

*Prize examples:  piece of candy, soda for the end of the meeting, cookie, gum pick next week's game.
**I realize that the same scout could easily win the FIRST response trivia each time, so you can't win it twice in a row.  Prize examples:  exempt from KP at campout, scout T-shirt.

Have fun!

Article from The Gazette

Nation Could Use More Scouts

It's hard to imagine the pain facing love ones of the four Boy Scouts who were killed when a twister ripped through their camp in Iowa recently.  Don't forget them.  They are:  Aaron Eilerts, 14; Sam Thomsen, 13; Ben Petrzilka, 14; and Josh Fennen, 13.
This was the loss of our boys who were likely to become extraordinary men - the kind who would become leaders in their communities and put others ahead of themselves.  How would anyone know this?  Because they were Scouts, meaning they were statistically likely to succeed.  There's no shortage of cadets, at the Air Force Academy as well as the other service academies, who were Boy Scouts.  Many of them were Eagle Scouts, the pinnacle of Scouting's ranks.
Moments after the tornado turned their camp to shreds, it was evident how the Iowas Scouts had been prepared to serve.  They immediately began putting their training to work, digging through rubble to free and tend to their injured peers.  While most children understandably would have panicked, the Boy Scouts went to work.  Some broke into an equipment shed, grabbed tools and chainsaw, and began clearing fallen trees from the road so parents and rescuers could get to the scene.
The boys who died can never be replaced.  But their deaths should bring attention to the need for more Boy Scouts, in a culture that's suffering from an abundance of weak men, barely prepared to care for themselves.  More Boy Scouts, like the four who died, would make our future world a much better place.

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful....

.....friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Many elements of the Scout Law were evident on Thursday and Friday during the pancake breakfasts while our scouts and scout's parents were unselfishly donating their service to the Dixon Men's Garden Club.  A big "THANK YOU" goes out to each and every one of you:  Robin, Evan, Todd, Mike C., Pat, Matt A., Mike R., Eric, Josh, Harry, Alex, Adam, Zach, Lisa, Andy, Alec, Ryan, Aaron, Kristy, Matt K., Jesse, and Rosa.  I hope I didn't miss anyone.

Cabin Campout

When we arrived to camp on Friday, we unpacked our stuff, gathered wood and started a fire to keep us warm.  We decided to start having fun so  we had a snowball fight, built a fort, and had fun giving people snow faces.  For cracker barrel, we each had a dozen cookies and we played cards.

Saturday morning, we had breakfast of oatmeal, sausage, and OJ.  We did not have pancakes as planned because we discovered that there was a mouse in our trailer and he got to the pancake mix first.  We also found marshmallows and ripped up paper in the charcoal bag.

After breakfast, we went sledding.   It was a lot of fun.  We also had another mini snowball fight and gave more snow faces.  We had no problem keeping warm- the cabin was almost up to 100 degrees!  We had to open windows and doors to cool it down.

Lunch consisted of grilled ham and cheese, and soup.  That warmed up our insides.  Zeb cooked supper which was watery hamburger helper- but it was good- corn, and milk.  The adults made themselves pot roast.  After supper, we played more cards.

On Sunday, we ate breakfast cereal bars, donuts, milk and OJ and packed up and headed home.

Scout attendance:  Eric A., Seth B., Alek B., Kyllian L., Todd N., Zach W.

Adults:  Dave F., Greg W., Steve B., Dave L.
